Cars pull to the side of the road. People rise from their chairs. Strangers stand shoulder to shoulder, heads bowed, honouring the men and women who gave their lives to protect the land and its people.

It is a moment of collective grief so profound that it binds the nation together. And in Israel, a country so small that every loss is felt personally, the weight of that silence speaks louder than words.

Then, as the sun sets on Yom HaZikaron, something remarkable happens. The nation transitions directly into Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day. From the deepest mourning into celebration. From tears into dancing. It is one of the most powerful and uniquely Israeli experiences in the world.

This transition carries a truth that few nations understand as deeply as Israel does: freedom comes at a cost. Independence was never handed to the Jewish people. It was earned through sacrifice, defended through courage, and sustained through an unshakable belief that this land, and its people, are worth protecting.

This year, that truth is not a lesson from history. It is the daily reality.

As Israel marks its 78th Independence Day, the nation is not simply remembering past wars. It is living through one. The ongoing conflict with Iran has brought fresh waves of loss, displacement, and heartbreak. Families are once again sending their loved ones to the front lines. Communities in the north and south are still reeling from months of rocket fire, evacuations, and uncertainty. And for many, the grief that Yom HaZikaron asks us to hold is not a distant memory. It is a phone call from last month. The empty seat at the dinner table. The child who still flinches at loud sounds.

Nearly every family in Israel has been touched by this war in some way. In a nation of just over ten million people, no loss is distant. We are like one big family, and every loss of life feels deeply personal.

Yet amid this grief, there are quiet stories of strength that deserve to be told.

N. is a woman who lives in the far north of Israel. She is not the type to talk about difficulty, nor the type who wants to be seen. She deals with the complex reality of her life quietly, with inner strength, and with the determination to move forward for herself, her home, and her family.

Her husband is a company commander in the reserves, a position that carries especially heavy responsibility. Many days away from home. Countless decisions. And a weight on his shoulders that few can fully understand.

During the fighting, her husband lost his deputy, a young officer who fell in battle. It was a shocking and painful loss. But he continued. He stayed with his soldiers. He continued to lead. He continued to fight. Not because he did not feel pain, but because he felt responsibility. Because he felt a sense of mission. Because he believed in the cause for which he enlisted.


Meanwhile, at home, N. continued to hold everything together. She maintained routines. She kept life moving for her family. When asked, she simply says, “This is the situation, and we understand it. With all the difficulty, you have to continue to function. You have to continue to lead a life.”

Recently, N. attended an evening hosted by Vision for Israel for the wives of reserve soldiers. She admitted that if she had known it was a processing and support event, she probably would not have come. She thought it was just a fun evening out. But she was surprised by how liberating and light it felt, and how much it was simply enjoyable.

At the end of the evening, she wanted to say thank you. Thank you for the opportunity to stop for a moment. Thank you for the place. Thank you for the feeling that someone sees.

That evening did not change the complex reality N. lives in. But it gave her a break from the grind of daily life. It reminded her that even the strongest among us simply need someone to see them.

This is the heart of what Vision for Israel does. We are on the ground, every day, serving as a bridge between supporters like you and the people who need help most. We provide aid to soldiers and their families. We offer emotional and practical support to communities affected by war. We create spaces where people like N. can exhale, even if only for an evening.

And as we celebrate the miracle of Israel’s independence on Yom Ha’atzmaut, we are reminded that the same miracle continues today, but it requires ongoing sacrifice and support.

As Jewish families across Israel gathered around the Passover table this week, the story of the Exodus carries a weight that feels deeply personal. Passover reminds us of a time when the people of Israel cried out in distress and God answered with deliverance, bringing them from bondage into freedom. It is a celebration of hope, faithfulness, and the promise that no season of darkness lasts forever.

But this year, many of those tables had an empty seat.

Israel has entered another major war with Iran, dramatically escalating tensions across the region, including Lebanon and Syria. The conflict has triggered a national state of emergency. Schools have been closed. Travel has been restricted. And tens of thousands of reserve soldiers have been mobilized to defend the nation, many of them called up for the seventh or eighth time since the war in Gaza began.

These reservists are not career soldiers. They are fathers, husbands, students, and professionals who left their homes, their jobs, and their families with little notice. For some, the call to serve has come so often that there have been more days in uniform than days at home in recent years. The exhaustion is enormous. And the toll on their families is something few people talk about.

Because when a reservist is called up, the family serves too.

Wives and children are left to cope with uncertainty, fear, and the grinding practical demands of daily life. Many households suddenly lose their primary source of income. Children struggle with anxiety and the repeated absence of a parent. And the wives carry it all, holding the home together while their hearts break again and again in silence.

Shelli (name has been changed for privacy) is a mother of four from Jerusalem, including twins who are now four years old. Her husband has been called up seven or eight times. After an appreciation evening we held for wives of reservists, she approached our team and simply said: Thank you. Thank you for one evening in which I was able to breathe.

She spoke honestly about the worry that never lets up, the thoughts that come at night after the house finally falls asleep, and a fear almost no one talks about: she wonders what kind of man will come back to her. When he returns for short breaks, she sees the change in his eyes, in his silence. One of his commanders was killed during an operational activity, and the weight of that loss sits heavily on him. After one long round of duty, he came home and could not tell the difference between their little twins. The girls had grown so much in the months he was away. He simply had not been there to see it happen.

At the appreciation evening, surrounded by other women who understood exactly what she was going through, there was no need to explain. No need to apologize. She told us it was the first time she did not feel alone in what she carries. It was a reminder that someone sees her, that what she is going through is real, and it gave her the strength to keep going.

Shelli’s story is just one, so touching, but it represents so many women who continue to keep a home running, to function through chores and school routines and bedtime and everything in between, while their hearts are on the battlefield.

Vision for Israel has been hosting reservists and their wives at the Millennium Centre for therapeutic sessions. During these gatherings, we provide practical help, encouragement, and opportunities for families to recharge and receive emotional support. We create moments of relief and community for women who are carrying the weight of war at home. For one evening, they can set down the burden and simply breathe.

The cost of living in Israel continues to rise. The economic and social impact of this prolonged conflict is enormous, disrupting communities across the entire country. Missile threats and security alerts have become part of daily life. Even when the fighting quiets, the emotional and financial fallout continues. Families face a long road of rebuilding and healing.

Passover teaches us that God hears the cries of His people and brings deliverance. Darkness is never the end of the story. But He often works through the hands of those willing to act.

Once again, Israel finds itself at war and we can’t help but wonder if the timing is a coincidence.

In the Jewish calendar, the weeks after Purim carry a meaningful shift. We move from the joy and celebration of deliverance to the sober reflection and preparation of Passover. It is a change in atmosphere; from costumes and courage to remembrance and readiness. And in many ways, this transition mirrors Israel’s reality right now.

Purim reminds us how God preserved His people through bravery and unity, when ordinary men and women chose to stand together against a threat that felt overwhelming. Passover, in turn, calls us to remember freedom and deliverance, but also responsibility: the duty to protect the vulnerable, to bring others out of bondage, and to care for one another as one family.

The similarities between Haman and the Iranian regime are striking. Not only because of the geographical location of former Persia, but also in their hatred of the Jewish people and their desire to annihilate them.

As this war wages and we approach Passover, our hearts are especially drawn to the families carrying a burden many never see.

Israel’s reserve soldiers have been called up again and again. Each time, they leave behind jobs, routines, and the everyday stability their families depend on. But the sacrifice does not belong to the soldiers alone. Spouses become single parents overnight. Children absorb the stress, the long absences, the sudden changes, and the quiet fear. Many families are doing their best to appear strong while feeling stretched to the limit.

In response, Vision for Israel has launched a new initiative to support reserve soldiers and their families through therapeutic care and strengthening experiences. In collaboration with the army, we are hosting and delivering professional sessions designed to bring practical help, emotional support, and genuine encouragement. So far, we have held several events at the Millennium Centre; some focused on building community and strength among soldiers’ wives, others designed for the whole family, and even therapeutic couples sessions. And we are continuing to develop and expand this program because the need is only growing.

One young family helps show why this matters so much. A. is 25 years old, married, and the father of a little child. He serves as a major general in the reserves and has been in active reserve service since the outbreak of war on 7 October 2023. He reports each time he is called up out of deep mission and commitment to Israel’s security. His daughter was born during the fighting, and the family has faced the challenges of raising a baby while enduring intensive and prolonged service. Despite financial and personal strain, A. continues to serve with kindness, responsibility, and a heart to give. His family needs support now—stability and security alongside continued service.

Passover teaches that freedom is not just something we celebrate; it is something we protect. And in this season, strengthening the family units of those defending Israel is urgent.

As we look back on 2025, our hearts are filled with gratitude for your steadfast love and your willingness to stand with Israel in a demanding year. When fear, uncertainty, and need pressed in from every side, you answered with compassion that was practical, immediate, and deeply personal.

Because of you, Vision for Israel was able to distribute a grand total of 7,374,620 NIS / £1,777,300 ($2,397,658) in 2025 to strengthen communities, protect lives, and bring relief to families carrying heavy burdens. (Totals may reflect small variances due to exchange rates and rounding.)

Your giving was directed to three critical areas:

Emergency, security and first aid responders: 5,459,664 NIS / £1,315,795 ($1,775,062)

Family Aid / Welfare: 1,307,236 NIS / £315,050 ($425,012)

Here are some of the life-changing outcomes your support made possible in 2025:

84 safety shelters helped protect families and communities during alerts and attacks.

3 Ambulances: 2 ICU ambulances and 1 mass casualty ambulance were provided to strengthen emergency response capabilities.

1,647 soldiers and security personnel were strengthened through vital support and provision.

620 terror victims received help and care in the aftermath of trauma and loss.

365 Holocaust survivors were remembered with practical assistance, dignity, and compassion.

2,788 families received gift cards so they could purchase essentials with dignity, including vulnerable families, the elderly, and those displaced or struggling.

912 children received brand-new backpacks so they could begin the school year equipped and encouraged.

102 students received scholarships to pursue education and build a future with hope.


Behind every number is a story. A mother buying basic groceries without choosing between food and medicine. A student who can continue learning because someone they may never meet believed in them. A survivor who feels seen. A soldier who knows they are not standing alone. A family that runs to shelter and finds it ready.

We do not take any of this for granted. Your generosity has been a steady light, helping us respond quickly in times of crisis while also investing in long-term strength for Israel’s people.

As February carries us closer to Passover, we find ourselves thinking about the table—what it represents, and who gathers around it. Passover is a time when Jewish families come together, open the Haggadah, and remember the faithfulness of God in the Exodus story. It’s filled with tradition, beauty, and meaning.

But this year, for many families across Israel, there’s one question that casts a shadow over the celebration: What will we put on the table?

At Vision for Israel, our team is working around the clock to prepare this year’s Passover distribution of gift cards for families in need. We do this every year—but this year is different. The number of struggling families has grown, and behind each number is a story of hardship, resilience, and hope.

Many of these families now fall into a category quietly called the “war poor.” These are not just the traditionally vulnerable. These are hardworking parents, small business owners, self-employed professionals, and reservists called up again and again for army duty. Families who were just managing to get by—until life changed in an instant.

The cost of living in Israel continues to rise, leaving even dual-income homes unable to meet basic monthly expenses. And today, almost 27% of families in the country are facing food insecurity. That means refrigerators that stay half-empty. Parents skipping meals so their children can eat. Simple things—like buying matzah, vegetables, or chicken—have become a luxury many can’t afford.

We’ve heard these stories firsthand. Our team meets every family in person during distributions. We see the weight they carry and hear their heartfelt gratitude when help arrives.

Because of the growing need and the sharp rise in prices, we’ve made the decision to raise the value of this year’s Passover gift cards to £100 ($130) per family. It’s a bold step—but a necessary one.

A single gift card may not sound like much, but to a mother standing in a grocery store, wondering what she can afford, it’s the difference between scarcity and dignity. It means she can choose what her family will eat for the holiday, without shame. It means she can prepare her table with love, not fear.

One couple we heard from recently, G. and K., shared a story that truly touched our hearts.

They’re a young family with two children—a 12-year-old daughter and a 15-year-old son. In early 2023, after years of hard work and study, K. launched his consulting business. It was finally starting to take off. At the same time, he was completing his master’s thesis, after graduating with honors from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He poured his energy into both—determined to build a life of purpose and provision for his family.

Then, 7 October happened.

Like so many, K. was immediately called up for reserve duty and has served on the front lines almost nonstop since. Because his business was new, he didn’t qualify for income-based compensation—only minimum wage. That barely covered their basic expenses.

They found themselves caught in a painful place—unable to keep the business afloat, and ineligible for many government support programs because of technicalities. They’re now facing mounting debt and emotional exhaustion. But what struck us most wasn’t their hardship. It was their spirit.

They didn’t reach out in despair. They wrote to us out of a deep desire to get back on their feet; to stabilize, to restart the business, to finish school, and to restore a sense of normalcy for their children.

They just needed someone to come alongside them.

Because of your generosity, we installed 84 new safety shelters, bringing the total to 483 shelters since the project began. You helped 2,788 families receive gift cards for food and basic necessities, and you provided 912 children with new backpacks as they headed into the school year. At the Millennium Centre, 12 gatherings brought comfort and dignity to Holocaust survivors, terror survivors, children at risk, and reserve soldiers and their families. And with 64 medic bags delivered to communities in the north, you strengthened emergency response where every second matters. Three lifesaving ambulances were donated to MDA, including one and a first-of-its-kind MICU.

2025 Year in Review: Protecting and Providing Across Israel

Over 7,000 of the Israeli Defense Soldiers are alone—serving far away from their biological families. Many of them leave relatives, friends, and a comfortable life abroad to come and serve the nation of Israel. Others are Israelis who have no place to go because of extreme poverty or broken families.

When not in active service, these lone soldiers go back to an empty apartment. They don’t have parents to hug them, wash and iron their uniforms, or cook dinner for them. Many of them deal with financial distress due to the low wages they receive from the army.

At Vision for Israel, we appreciate the sacrifice of the lone soldiers, so caring for them has become an important outreach project. We work closely with organisations that support lone soldiers and we provide necessary items such as large travel backpacks, care packages, and financial aid to help the soldiers during their service. We salute our soldiers and stand by our commitment to improve their lives.

They risk their lives for their country—but many are fighting an invisible battle of their own.
