What's New?

This Saturday Tu Bishvat is celebrated in Israel.

Tu Bishvat literally means the 15th day of the month of Shvat.  It is the date of Rosh Hashanah La-ilanot, the “New Year for the Trees” – the turn of the year for the purposes of determining the age of a tree, which is needed for calculating a tithe.  (The fourth year of a tree’s fruit is to be dedicated to God.)

In Israel, we see the almond trees blossom, marking the early days of spring and the start of growing season.

“Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; do not spare; lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes. For you shall expand to the right and to the left, and your descendants will inherit the nations, and make the desolate cities inhabited.”
Isa 54: 2-3

A special education school in Jerusalem and Vision for Israel have partnered together for a special project to feed and educate the school's students. The children (ages 6-12) who attend the school have completely normal intelligence quotients, but they suffer from behavioural and emotional difficulties due to a lack of elementary human connection. Most of the children also come from low-income families. Their environments do not provide them with normative life skills, so the school holds enriching activities and experiences to teach them these skills.

Going out to see a movie may seem like a trivial thing for most of us, but for some, it only happens on rare, special occasions. Recently, VFI joined a special project headed by the Jerusalem Welfare Department—supporting single adults in their 40s-60s who suffer from various functional disabilities. Due to their situation, these individuals are experiencing poverty and social exclusion. Their lifestyle lacks a time frame, so they often don't eat regularly and don't have a daily or weekly routine.

“Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in His holy mountain. Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion on the sides of the north, the city of the great King. God is in her palaces; He is known as her refuge.” Ps 48: 1-3

Each month we give away financial aid to the needy who suffer from harsh living conditions and hunger. Every day in Israel, adults and children go to bed with empty stomachs, not out of choice, but due to severe distress and the country's high cost of living.

Our recipients are very diverse: single parents, terror victims, the elderly and more. Among those who received aid this month were:

“And provide for those who grieve in Zion-- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.”
Isa. 61:3
